Xavier vs Villanova picks and predictions

Our predictions are compiled from the spread and total analysis and are indications of where we are looking for this match.
Our best bet is the game we love the most for that game, which we would actually put some of our bankroll into.

It’s not common for you to see a 7-4 team in the AP poll’s Top 25, but that’s exactly where you currently find 23rd-ranked Villanova – and for good reason. Three of his four losses came to UCLA, Purdue and Baylor with two losses on the road. Purdue and Baylor both held top spot in the poll at one point and UCLA reached No.2, and Villanova’s resume is bolstered by the fact that the contests against UCLA and Purdue were also single-digit deals. .

The quantitative rankings are even more forgiving of the Wildcats’ “failures”. KenPom ranked Villanova 12th while facing the 10th toughest schedule and ESPN’s BPI has Villanova eighth while having the fourth toughest schedule.

So what makes Villanova so good? Their success is largely due to two factors: enviable discipline at the team level and exceptional guard play.

They occupy the 52nd place for personal fouls and the eighth for the limitation of movement on the free throw line. They rank fourth in surrendered turnovers, which largely comes from their stellar guard play. Taking care of the ball isn’t the only thing Villanova’s guards do well as Collin Gillespie (16.2 PPG, 41% of three) and Justin Moore (14.7 PPG, 36% 3PT) are very capable scorers. inside and out. Their three-way skills are especially important as the Wildcats often push the volume 3 points in games (14th nationally).

As good as their backcourt play was, the lack of size in their frontcourt caused a lot of problems. The inability of the “big men” to create really limited a high percentage of shots near the rim, and the Wildcats took the 27th fewest 2-point attempts nationwide. The defensive rebound is always an uphill battle (238th), and those size struggles were perfectly exemplified in their three losses to UCLA, Purdue and Baylor – all of whom have much bigger and more talented frontcourt – in which they displayed a -33 rebound margin and allowed a 54% field goal percentage to 2 points.

Xavier has the manpower to exploit this weakness between 6-foot-11, 245-pound forward Jack Nunge (13.0 PPG, 7.8 RPG) and 6-foot-9, 225-pound forward Zach Freemantle, who , after recovering from injury, averages 12.3 PPG and 6.3 RPG. Second-year goaltender Colby Jones also has a nose for the glass with 8.2 rebounds per game.

If we use Villanova’s first three losses as a blueprint, Xavier matches the build.

Prediction: Xavier +5 (-103)

Covers NCAA Basketball Betting Analysis

Much of that total is simply how Villanova pulls depth. If we ignore his last game, in which he shot 17.4% but the game ended anyway due to the Wildcats allowing 79 points, Villanova shot 46% of three in games that went over and 33 % in matches that went below.

The Wildcats have gotten a bit cold lately, shooting just 23% of three in their last three games. To make matters worse, Xavier might not be the best team to hope to get hot against.

Although he ranks “only” 103rd this season in 3-point allowance percentage, he has allowed just 27% in his last six games.

Prediction: Less than 136 (-107)

Unfortunately for Villanova, the structure of this game lends itself to another loss to a quality opponent that the Wildcats will add to their resume.

Look for Xavier to use their size to kick the ball inside and control the glass and limit second chances (19th nationally in defensive rebound) and their recently improved perimeter defense to lessen the impact of Villanova’s barrage to three.

Take: Xavier +5 (-103)
